This Dress Turns Transparent When You're 'Turned on' NEw Fashions

This Dress Turns Transparent When You're 'Turned on' Considering that the gimmick behind mood rings still sort of blows my mind, I'm having a really tough time trying to process this: Studio Roosegaarde's new Intimacy  dress, which shifts from opaque to transparent when its wearer is "turned on." Oh, it's simple really, according to the designers. The dress is made up of "smart e-foils" that respond "to the heartbeat of each person," becoming "more or less transparent" with faster or slower heartbeats. In theory, that makes sense: My heart rate would definitellllly rise if I saw Ryan Gosling walk into my favorite Lower East Side coffee shop, so yeah. But it'd also rise if I were nervous (public speaking), mildly exerting myself (running late for the subway, fighting with the weird microwave at work), or over-caffeinated (always) and those are all probably not times I'd like to be instantly, uncontrollably naked. Actually, wait, neither would that moment when I'd run into Ryan Gosling at a coffee shop, so it all seems pretty dicey, but you know, the designers disagree.

Solar-Powered Electric Vehicle Charger Unveiled New 2014

An intriguing solar-powered electric vehicle charger has been created and recently unveiled by Princeton Satellite Systems in Plainsboro, New Jersey. Called a SunStation, it employs solar panels to recharge electric vehicles, even two at the same time. The company says their EV charger can charge a Prius hybrid plug-in in 1.5 hours, a Chevy Volt in 5 hours, and a Nissan Leaf in eight. The advantage of their SunStations is that they can be installed just about anywhere, as long as there is enough sunlight. (Most EV chargers need to be located near a conventional power supply.) SunStations can be used for power needs other than electric vehicles, such as homes or small businesses after an electrical outage from a storm. There may also be interest for use in other countries where there is no grid, and no or little electricity. A SunStation might actually be able to provide electricity to an entire village in some remote areas. There are two sizes available, one with four solar panels and a 1.6 kilowatt battery for $27,000 and a larger one priced at $55,000. The President of Princeton Satellite Systems said some companies, like Starbucks, have expressed interest. Organizations with large staff may consider them also as a perk for their employees, such as high-tech companies in Silicon Valley. At the search engine called Infoseek years ago, there was at least one EV charger in the company parking lot where the CEO would charge his EV-1. In August of this year, Santa Clara County (in the Silicon Valley area) announced it has twelve EV charging stations available to the public at the County of Santa Clara Civic Center. Princeton Satellite Systems, Inc. also develops software for the aerospace industry, iPhone apps, and will be releasing CubeSat hardware as well.

Solar Sailor, Electric Boats Designs New 2014

A passenger ferry in Sydney Harbour, Australia, called the Solar Sailor, can run on wind, sun, battery, or diesel, or in any combination. It uses patented Solar Wing technology to simultaneously capture sunlight for electricity and for wind power. The wings move automatically via computer, tracking the sun for optimal solar collection and the wind for optimal sail power. If it gets really windy, the wings fold down against the solar boat. Much like a hybrid car, large batteries on board the solar energy boat store electricity generated by the diesel generators and collected by the solar panels. The electricity then powers the electric motors.

World's Largest Solar-Powered Boat Completes Its Trip Around The World

A crew of five piloted the 31-meter (102-ft) long, 15-meter (49-ft) wide vessel, which is covered in 537 square meters (5,780 sq ft) of solar panels. These provide power to four electric motors (two located in each hull), that have a maximum output of 120 kW and can propel the boat to a speed of 14 knots. It is constructed mainly of a light yet durable carbon fiber-sandwich material.

“For 8 years we have been working on achieving this world tour with solar energy,” expedition leader Raphaël Domjan wrote yesterday, in his most recently-posted logbook entry. “If everything goes according to plan, we should cross the last longitude line tomorrow and then reach Monaco, the departure point of our adventure. Friday May 4th, 2012, on this day early in the afternoon we shall succeed in this first journey around the world with solar energy.”
